In unit 16 we studied the five conditions, as well as the way reported speech alters slightly from direct speech. The Zero conditional form is [if(when) + present tense, present tense]. You could replace if with when and get the same meaning. The First conditional form is [if + present simple, will]. "Will" could be replaced by a modal verb (would/could/might). It depicts a real situation in the future that is possible. The Second conditional form is [if + past simple, (modal: might/could/would) + base form. This communicates a hypothetical situation presently untrue and unlikely to come true. The Third form is [if + past perfect, (modal: would/could/might) + have + past participle. This is for communicating an action that is unlikely or hypothetical, so the result too would be impossible. The Mixed form is [if + past perfect, would + base form]. This is used for combining a hypothetical with another hypothetical or more, with several possibilities.
