This unit discusses how to teach new language. It breaks it down into three areas, vocabulary, grammatical structures and language functions. The unit identifies the factors determining how difficult vocabulary is to learn for a student and also advises the teacher about criteria for vocabulary selection: its appropriateness for students and for the tasks being undertaken, its frequency in use, and of course how suitable it is for the level of the student.The unit suggests using the straight arrow structure to teacher vocab and provides examples of the appropriate activities for each stage.
The unit analyses the teaching of grammatical structures in a similar way - identifying what a student needs to learn about a grammatical structure (e,g meaning, use, forms and patterns) as well as suggesting appropriate ESA excercises.
Finally the unit briefly looks at the teaching of language functions, functions like inviting or refusing and stresses the use of activation exercises to help teach them as well as suggesting using boomerang or patchwork ESA structures to teach them.
I found the suggested lesson plans and exercises extremely interesting. Especially for the teaching of language functions. Having studied the unit I feel I have a better understanding of the slightly different techniques needed to teach the different areas. Also, I feel I've learnt some very good tips about exercises to include in lessons to teach these language areas.
