Unite 11 explores reading and listening as receptive skills. Our motives and reasons can be categorized as for a purpose or for entertainment. These may be mixed, of course, as when reading a report to learn specific information and finding it to be both interesting and enjoyable. Thus, I learn that the mind with its store of living knowledge is important in order to understand the seeing and hearing.
We use five different skills to process information into understanding. Predictive skills, scanning for specific information, skimming for a general overview, detailed information for instance, on how to do something or get somewhere, and deduction from content when we figure out what a new word means,just by the surrounding context.
As teachers, we need to actively teach these skills by employing different approaches and methods. We can pre-teach the vocabulary and/or language structures that are unknown to the students. A careful selection of text or audio suitable for the student level is necessary.We can make sure the topic is suitable, then generate interest by discussion or other 'engage' phase activities. Tasks are also necessary in order to promote understanding.
