This unit focuses on the teaching of the productive skills: Writing and Speaking.
It begins by discussing the difference between accuracy and fluency when applied to these skills and describing a number of activities that are useful for promoting these skills. For accuracy based activities the language is controlled by the teacher and the unit suggests using drilling and prompting as well as guided roleplay and model dialogues. Fluency based activities allow students to be more creative with the language and although the tacher might set the task the output is determined by the students. The tasks suggested to promote this include role play, discussion and debates.
The unit then goes on to identify reasons a teacher might have problems motivating students to speak and offers ideas how to get over this reluctance including planning and changing classroom dynamics.
The unit then provides a lesson plan for a straight arrow speaking lesson as well as some excellent tips for helping students during the lesson. I found this section the most useful especially the emphasis on making sure that students have enough time to prepare and providing feedback at the end of the activity rather than constantly interrupting.
Finally the lesson looks at writing skills and discusses the factors to be considered when teaching writing, including handwriting, punctuation and layout. It follows this with a typical lesson plan.
