I will say I was surprised at the way the two groups of skills are split in English I will always remember reading and writing would go together, but I guess that is only after the stage where a person can already listen and by that I mean understand and also speak the language. To bring it down to basics is some what strange to me however I completely understand, while learning Spanish I have great difficulty understanding and speaking. So to include that in the group of four and then completely change the way I was taught makes perfect sense to bring it back to the basics of what information you receive compared to what information you give to others through speaking and writing is far more practical. Even further more to have them as polar opposites makes more sense because they seem to balence each other out in my eyes.
