Unit 5 LESSON PLANNING Functions of lesson planning 1. An aid to planning – think logically through the stages in relation to available time. 2. A working document – helps to keep on target, something to refer to, 3. A record of what has been done in class and what materials have been used. Or another teacher taking over is easier. Basic principles of lesson planning • Keep it simple • Do not try to script the lesson. • Structure it and keep the same structure • Write the time for each activity • Check for balance of skills to have a smooth flow. • Keep it flexible and open to changes. Being organised – have a lesson plan, check for materials needed and they work, arrange the seating, clean board, break the ice. Lesson plans should include: learner objectives, personal aims, language point, teaching aids, anticipate problems, procedure/ activities used, phase – ESA, timing, interaction (T-S or S-S), class level, number of students, date & time, observations. Monitoring your lessons A good teacher monitors the quality of the lessons. To improve, evaluate the lessons and make notes of what can be improved. Focus on strengths and weaknesses. Planning a sequence of lessons - Flexibility, goals, revision, variety (mix of activities) and balance (all skills are included).
