This unit went over the types of assessment that a teacher or institution may administer students, and how these different assessments can inform instruction. For example, a diagnostic test can be given at the beginning of a course to determine what level of English your students have already mastered and also identify themes or common areas of improvement. After gathering this information, a teacher can begin to plan targeted lessons and units to help students improve. Assessments are also important to track student learning and to check in after completing a unit or series of lessons to assess whether students were able to master the content. If a group of students performed poorly on a progress check about linking verbs for example, the teacher would need to reteach the lessons and re-assess at the end of the series to make sure that students reached the learning goals.
