We have witnessed two completely different ways to conduct a lesson. One discouraging, the other one encouraging. One demeaning, the other one exulting. One effective, the other one ineffective.
In the first lesson the teacher lacked the engaging stage, in fact he started the study stage right away, restricting the chances of the students to get ready for the following activities. Here the teacher did not even care to praise the students, as a matter of fact he seemed to be annoyed when he could not get the answers he needed. He was extremely demotivating at times by making negative comments such as “you’ve done nothing” or “at last someone got it right ”. In various occasions he was rude using the incorrect gestures and urging the students to finish the activities very quickly, without confirming whether they understood or not before getting hands into it.
On the contrary, in the second lesson the teacher built rapport by getting to know the students' names and taking time to introduce himself. He maintained a positive attitude during the whole lesson, he praised the students in many occasions and had a friendly approach. He effectively elicited the target language from the students by writing cues on the board. The teacher was always there for the students before the activities by reassuring the students understanding of the activities and during by monitoring the students. The flow of the lesson went very natural, making it a straight arrow ESA lesson.
