I continue to find it helpful to see the systematic analysis of verb and tense structure, teasing out the rules that are common across different tenses. In particular, I appreciate seeing the features of all continuous forms ("to be" + "-ing" form); perfect forms ("to have" + past participle); and perfect continuous forms ("to have" + "been" + "-ing" form). It focuses attention on where the differences lie among tenses, enabling me as a teacher to give concrete clues to my students to interpret the form and better understand content.
The exercise of using the same sentence in different tenses, and comparing present tense forms to different past tense forms, was equally useful for clarifying differences in usage.
