This unit covers the idea of the receptive skills - reading and listening and how best to tackle the task of teaching these skills to English language learners. While these seem to be the most basic skills of any language, it can pose many difficulties to language learners. While language is most generally understood through reading and listening, it's not as simple as it is necessary to be able to master these receptive skills.
Reading is not simply looking at words, and listening is not simply hearing words. To fully read and listen to language one must be able to understand the language being presented to them which means they must use their mind (pre-existing knowledge).
While language is the base of receptive skills, teachers must effectively utilize different topics and tasks, and class interest teach these skills to their students.
