This unit tackles about the receptive skills. There are two types of receptive skills – the listening and reading. The reasons or motives for reading and listening can be for a purpose or entertainment. Reading and listening are not simply matters for the eyes and ears, but also a matter of using our minds to literally understand words and process them in our pre-existing knowledge to gain true understanding. There are a number of sub-skills for reading and listening and they are predictive skills, scanning, skimming, detailed reading, and deduction. The teaching and learning of receptive skills presents quite a number of potential problems. However, it can be avoided by pre-teaching vocabulary and careful selection of texts.
In this unit I learn that in order to get students participate in the lesson I should choose topic that interest them. Each student doesn’t have the same interest that's why a variety of topic over a period of time is needed to ensure that all student’s interests will be catered.
