This unit covers pronunciation and phonology, which is the study of the physical properties of sound. Both of these are important parts of speaking any language but are often the hardest things to teach as native language speakers.
Intonation, stress, and articulation are 3 important parts of teaching students how to speak in English. These are often difficult to teach because the subtleties that are important are often overlooked and go unnoticed by native speakers. Intonation can often add colour to what the speaker is saying and thus is important to mastering a language. Meanwhile stress gives listeners insight into what is the most important parts of what is being said. Lastly, articulation explains how sounds are produced. Sounds in the English language are classified using the International Phonemic Alphabet and this stands as a universal system of classifying the sounds used in the English language globally.
