This unit covers the reasons for using assessment and evaluation tools (especially testing) as well as the different types of assessment that are typically used in the language learning environment.
The two types of non-test assessment presented are tutorials and evaluation by students of the course. Tutorials are used individually or as a group to review work done during the course, discuss the aims of the lessons, review how well students have performed course tasks and converse about any problems they are facing. Evaluation by students can provide feedback on the structure and content of the course, as well as any specific points that will help the teacher ensure the course is best meeting their needs, from the students’ perspective.
The different types of tests covered include tests given in the language school and/or during the course, such as placement, diagnostic, progress (both formal and informal), practice, and achievement; and tests such as external examinations and proficiency tests that are standardized across language learning environments by outside entities for specific purposes.
