Teaching pronunciation is important but often neglected by teachers because they lack the confidence and training to teach this aspect. An effective teacher considers the teaching of pronunciation as an integral part of the course. Skilled pronunciation teaching gives life to a class because it reflects feelings and personal reactions to different situations.
Intonation is considered to be the variation in volume and pitch in a whole sentence, whereas stress is more concerned with individual words.
The normal pattern of intonation in a statement is the rise/fall intonation. With the falling intonation you are also indicating that you have finished what you want to say.
The second common intonation pattern is the fall/rise pattern. This indicates surprise or often disagreement, but above all indicates that the speaker wants the person to whom he is speaking to respond or confirm. A fall/rise pattern can also indicate that the speaker hasn’t yet finished what he or she has to say.
The last pattern can have a kind of intonation which is basically flat, which often indicates that the speaker doesn’t really have that much to say, and perhaps doesn’t want to communicate.
Techniques like using nonsense word to practice conveying attitude, using gesture, humming or singing, and making marks on the board can be used to indicate intonation and stress.
