Balance is the key to a successful class. You can't just drop a bunch of vocabulary and rules on a person and expect them to learn it. Essentially what would be happening is memorization and not actual understanding. This makes applying the information in actual speech much harder in the future and not something we teachers want to promote. It is also boring leading towards the information most likely not sticking. But by first engaging with the students, waking them up in a sense, then giving information, is much more effective because you have essentially tricked the brain into thinking what is going on is interesting. Now that you have caught their attention and taught them what they need to know, they need to be able to apply this knowledge. This is important to solidify the information into the student's brain as if it is not applied the brain might label it as useless knowledge and forget it. By making an activity to go with the lesson you also give students engaging memories to recall back on when trying to apply what they learn in class to the real world. What are you more likely to remember? A vocab test or a rap you and a classmate had to create using the vocab and then perform? The rap! Because it stands out. The goal is not to just teach but also have students want to learn.
