Language consists of four basic skills which can be categorized into two groups. Receptive skills, which are reading and listening. Then productive skills, which are speaking and writing. Essentially receptive skills are aspects of the language you have to absorb or receive whereas productive skills are aspects of a language you yourself create or produce. In this lesson we focused on receptive skills. There are two reasons one may use their receptive skills. For a purpose, as in it will help you achieve some particular aim or goal. Or for entertainment, like reading a book or watching a movie. There are also instances where it may be both. One may be reading a book for a class but also be enjoying the book. There are also a variety of ways one may read. Skimming, scanning, deductions, etc and they all have the common factor in which a basic understanding of the language is necessary. The best way to teach these kinds of skills is to let your students practice. Have them listen and analyze texts or interviews. There are two major points to consider when doing this. Pick a topic that would be interesting to your class and make sure its appropriate for the level of your class. It can't be too easy but it also mustn't be so hard they are lost; and also make sure to go over new vocab words prior to the assignment.
