The Past Tenses are used primarily to place an action or situation in a time in the past. There are 4 aspects of the past tense, past simple, past continuous, past perfect and past perfect continuous. Past simple verbs are either regular or irregular. Past continuous uses past tense of auxiliary verb "be" and present participle. Past perfect tense is basically "the past in the past", or the past viewed from an alternate vantage point. And finally the past perfect continuous form, while not used or taught much, has basically 1 major use; to express longer actions in the past that had been going on up to the past moment that we were talking about, but don't care if it continued.
