In this unit we reviewed "The first lesson." The first lesson should be about getting to know your students and making sure they know each other. Things that should be found out on the first day include their level of English, how they best like to learn and their interests, what do they want to learn and what do they need to learn. Activities such as a survey or a pass the ball game can be used to find out the answers to these questions. Activities will also allow the students to bond and become comfortable with each other. We also reviewed what to do if students are not all on the same level, which can occur if your teaching in a low funded traditional school setting. Some methods of dealing with this include using different materials for your students that reflect their level of English, then either making sure that it is on the same topic so that at the end of the class you can bring them all together for a discussion or you can completely divide the classroom and split your time between the two groups. You can also choose to do nothing or pair strong students with weak students. This way a strong student can clarify what they know and practice explaining this to another person and a weak student can have help with their work. A good classroom should have a balance between all these methods.
