When introducing new language to students, a student needs to do 4 things with the new language: be exposed to it; understand it; understand it's structure, and be able to pronounce it. The lessons a teacher presents will involve vocabulary, grammar & function. Mostly an individual lesson will focus on one aspect only. When teaching vocabulary, selecting which words to introduce can be a difficult decision, unlike grammar & function, which is largely dictated by the level of class. Lessons for grammar and vocabulary typically use the straight arrow ESA method, while language function lessons are more suited for patchwork or boomerang ESA lessons.
