In Unit 6 of the 120-hour TEFL course, I learned that the past tense, like the present tense, has four categories: the past simple, the past continuous, the past perfect, and the past perfect continuous. In the affirmative, the past simple is made by adding -ed or -d to the base form of a verb. The past continuous is made by using the subject + was/were + the verb ending with -ing. The past perfect is made by using the subject + had + the past participle. Finally, the past perfect continuous is made by using the subject + had + been + the verb ending with -ing.
