I have learned from this unit that there is no clear-cut answer to what vocabulary to choose. Many factors should play into choosing the right vocabulary to teach your class. These factors include the appropriacy to the student and task, how often students are likely to come across and use this vocabulary, and its teachability. The level of a class strongly plays a role in this decision. For beginners, it is suggested that vocabulary which can be taught with associated pictures is more effective. One also should not just shove a vocabulary list in front of a student but go over aspects of each set of words like its meaning, when/how to use it properly, its grammatic stance, how it interacts with other words, spelling, and pronunciation. Similarly, for grammatical structures, you will want to go over this as well. Along with its forms and patterns, and discrepancies between its spoken usage and written usage. In this unit, we also reviewed lesson plans such as the straight line, boomerang, and patchwork. We also went over how it may be used when teaching vocabulary or grammatical structures. I was also able to practice making my own lesson plans and comparing to the suggested plans.
