This unit focused on productive skills. Which consist of speaking and writing. While these two things are very different at the core their used for the same reason. To communicate with others. Writing differentiates from speaking in two major ways. When speaking any misunderstanding can be fixed on the spot. Whereas in writing this is not the case. On the flipside when speaking students don't typically have as much time to think of what they want to say as they would when writing. Both are important skills that should be taught accordingly. Next, there are two components when teaching either of these subjects. Fluency and accuracy. Fluency focuses on the student's ability to clearly communicate what it is they are trying to say and not with grammatical structures and pronunciation. (You only focuses on these when it is so wrong you cannot understand what is trying to be communicated.) Whereas accuracy specifically focuses on correct grammar, usage, spelling, and pronunciation. Accuracy based activities include drills, prompting, guided roleplay, and model dialogues. Fluency activities include free role play, discussions, debates, and other communication games. When teaching accuracy activities are much more teacher controlled and in fluency activities, the students have more reign and the teacher just keeps them on track.
