In unit 13 the we are introduced to the teaching of pronunciation and phonology which are rarely highlighted but hold significant importance on execution and recognition of speech. Phonology is the study, science, analysis and classification of the physical properties of sounds. They are adhered to by the areas of stress, rhythm and intonation as well as on the concentration of the international phonetic alphabet. Intonation is a variation in volume and pitch in a whole sentence, whereas stress is concerned with individual words. There are different techniques for indicating and teaching intonation such as, nonsense words, by gesture, humming or singing and using the board to demonstrate. The techniques to teaching and indicating stress on words are as follows, contrastive stress, by gesture, choral work, the board and using stress marks. Articulation and the manner of such describe how the mouth and vocal chords are to react when producing speech with successful execution. Diagrams and practice are the most effective way to demonstrate the use of the lips, teeth and flow of air when using speech. Overall the unit contains a lot of detailed information and holds very specific instructions on the correct methods to improve and instruct the usage of phonology and verbal pronunciation.
