In unit 6 the objective primarily focused on past tenses and how they are used appropriately. There are four past tenses which are as follows, past simple, past continuous, past perfect and past perfect continuous. Each tense has specific rules attributed to it and a certain degree of usage. First, there is past simple. Its construct is to add -ed or -d to the end of a regular verb. There are also irregular verbs such as see/saw or take/took so one must be familiar with these irregular verbs to conjugate it properly. Next is the past continuous which refers to interrupted past actions. It can express an action which began before a certain time and probably continued after it. The usage of past continuous is was/were + ing to the end of a verb, a time reference is crucial to using the past continuous correctly. The past perfect tense is to describe past events of past events, thus the viewpoint is that of another past viewpoint. The formula for using past perfect tense is with subject + had + -ed or -d and is great for story telling and used in conjunction with other past tenses. Lastly, there is past perfect continuous tense. This tense isn't the most frequently used or taught tense but does have one particular major purpose. It is used to talk about longer actions or situations in the past that had been going on continuously up to the past moment that we are thinking about. The trick is that we don't or are not concerned to know if whether it continued. To use past perfect continuous tense one must have the subject + had + been + -ing in order to construct it properly. Overall, the usage of past tense verbs is very important and essential when using the English language to describe all things in the past tense.
