In my opinion, when it comes to teaching vocabulary, the Presentation stage can include a combination of any of these things; Meaning, spelling, pronunciation, word grammar. When you explain grammar or vocabulary, you need to show how people use it. You focus not on the grammatical structures but simply on what you say in this particular context.
In general,to encourage students who are a little timid, give plenty of guidaness on what the conversation should be about. You can give the students a list of questions to ask each other or specific topics and lots of language inpus first. So before the activity gets under way make sure that the class knows the nessesary grammar and vocabulary with appropriate exaples.In this way students don't have to think about what to say, only how to say things. Set speaking task for pair group work as often as possible. The advantage is that the students are more aware of the need to get the other person's view instead of talking about themselves the whole time.
