Ali Chuk, Arizona TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This unit has provided me with a strong idea of the qualities a teacher must possess in order to have successful students. These qualities include confidence and sensitivity. As well as the important roles of a teacher such as a prompter and model. I believe that a teacher must have confidence in what they are teaching so their students too, can feel confident in what they are learning. Confidence is also an important quality to have in any instance where a teacher may have to discipline or correct a student. Sensitivity is also a strong quality to have as a teacher. Students can be from many different cultural backgrounds and when a teacher is conducting lessons they need to be aware of this. There may be some opposing views on how certain things should be taught and a teacher needs to be sensitive when dealing with these things. With these qualities a teacher also has imperative roles that need to be used within a classroom. As a prompter a teacher must help their students however, not take away initiative from them. The teacher also acts as a model. The students need their teacher to be knowledgable on all facets of the english language. What also helps a teacher produce successful learners is good learners. People who are willing to learn and willing to ask questions. These aspects can vary between the two groups of learners: 'young learners' and 'adult learners'. Often with young learners they have not chosen to learn english whereas adult learners have made their own decision to come to the class this can have an affect on whether or not the students are willing to learn. Adult learners would have most probably come into the class with previous experience of schooling and may be slightly less likely to ask questions because they may be afraid of failure. Young learners do not have as much experience and are more likely to want to ask questions.
