This unit is about teaching receptive skills, these are reading and listening. There are different types of reasons for listening and reading either for a purpose or for entertainment. As well as reading or hearing our minds grasp the overall meaning of things due to our previous knowledge and we use different skills to understand what we are hearing or seeing. Often this means we don't read or listen to every single word but can make sense of the overall meaning by scanning skimming or deducing the meaning from the general context. When teaching another language there are some useful ways to help learners with their receptive skills they include to pre-teach complex vocabulary, use comprehension tasks, and use topics the students are interested in.
