I have learnt so much from this unit on the methodologies of teaching and how they work in the classroom. I now know how the Engage, Study and Activate approach can be practiced and used to help motivate the students in their learning and keep the lessons lively and interesting. It seems to be a way of keeping the teaching moving forward in a positive direction whilst exploring a point or points of learning.
For instance, when the lesson starts students may not have spoken much of the language since their last lesson so the Engage stage encourages students to refocus on the language and to become individually involved in the lesson. The teacher prompts the students prior and new learning so that when it is time to move onto the Study phase the new learning can be focused upon. After the quieter Study phase, the Activate stage of the 'Straight Arrow' lesson is a means of fully integrating the learner's new language skills.
