Knik-Fairview, Alaska TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This unit has provided me with an overview of how to manage a class using eye contact, gesture, the voice, student names, the grouping of students, classroom arrangements, the teacher's position within the class during different activities, writing on the board, giving individual attention, teacher talk and student talk time, instructions, rapport, discipline, maintaining and responding to problem behaviours.
Previous experience of teaching in a college at further and higher education levels has meant that I have already met many of these challenges and reviewed them in my classroom management before. I am extremely grateful that this has been covered so comprehensively here as there are points made that I was unsure of before.
Particularly of use to me, I have learnt the importance and usage of eye contact and gesture in the classroom. I also found the part about writing on the board and turning around frequently a new revelation as I had previously relied on preparing the board in advance, OHP and allowing students to contribute as my main methods.
The method of talking at a level below the students level of study will be of great importance to my classroom practice as will be giving visual clues to encourage student participation. Getting students to explain back the instructions and monitoring the activity to check for understanding is something I will remember whilst in class.
I will show great respect to the students for their efforts as I hope they will show to me. I know learning a new language is not easy and errors and mistakes will be made along the way which can be easily corrected with positive rapport and classroom management on my part.
I have mentioned a few but there are many useful points in this unit that will help me take up my responsibilities as a teacher and to practice the correct classroom management on a daily basis.
