An effective teacher wears many hats in a lesson. That teacher may begin with a prompting question, leading into a managed instruction, which then leads to being an organizer while students break into groups to work. Without the different roles, students may find it difficult to be good learners. They have their own parts to play in learning well, but a teacher needs to recognize, even if it's in the middle of class, when he/she has "lost the class" and be able to change tactics or "roles." A lot of this can be helped when a teacher understands his/her learners, their backgrounds, ages, etc.
