Course books have many advantages that are there to assist the new teacher prepare his lessons. The advantages include a readily available syllabus that can be followed that give a tried and tested method of continuity and progression throughout the course.A good course book will also provide a balanced mix of grammar, vocabulary and skills work readily available for the teacher to draw upon throughout the course. As a basis it can provide a valuable structure for the teacher and students to follow.
However a course book should be used with caution so as not to become complacent and end up with boring predictable lessons. The good teacher will prefer to adapt the materials to suit the class more readily and to keep the material offered to the class up to date and relevant to their learning needs and interests.
