I believe that teaching receptive skills opens up new territory for students as they can consume information that they are interested in and learn English through enjoyment. Whether listening to the latest music or reading their favorite book, they require receptive skills that would allow then to access this part of the language that they are learning. However, how does one go about teaching these skills? Through simple topics that would interest students as beginners and then moving to more authentic materials, students can practice listening and reading in English. The students can become engaged in a lesson by grabbing their attention with a star or idol they all know and practice vocabulary that they know by explaining who it is and what they are famous for. In the study phase, they learn new vocabulary for the task that follows. Then they use a non-authentic or authentic form of material to practice these receptive skills and answer questions based on what they understood. Later on to activate what they have learned they replicate and test out their peers in a similar exercise. All the while the students think that this is a fun and easy lesson.
