The different forms of the past tense can be confusing even for english speakers who are native to the language. It is important that a clear understanding of the tense: simple past, past perfect, past perfect continuous and past continuous is understood. Simple past tense is used for completed actions, past perfect is used for past actions that have happened before other past actions, past continuous is required when talking about actions that have started in the past but continue. And past perfect continuous is used for long periods of action that have been going on up to a past moment being considered.
