Lesson planning is important for several reasons. First, to think through what it is the students will be learning from the lesson and why, and it should be appropriate to their level of learning. Second, a good lesson plan helps keep you on track to complete the learning objectives, however, it should also be flexible enough to meet the needs of the students as you are working through the content. Finally, it's helpful to have a record of a lesson to reflect on what went well and what could be improved so that the next time you or another person teaches it it can be improved.
