This unit covered four learning and developmental theories; native language and second language acquisition; and teaching methodologies for the younger group (ages 5-9) and the older group (ages 9-13), the former being Engage and Practice, and the latter being a combination of the Engage, Study, Activate phases. The unit also discusses the learning environment (for example, the merits of different seating arrangements) and describes the language levels in each of the four skills and specific character traits of the two age bands.
I have learned to make sure there is a lot of noise (e.g. singing) and movement, short activities, and a lot of repetition and drilling of the language in the younger age band classes. For the older age band classes, there should be more memorization tasks and more activities involving popular culture and less involving pretending. Also, all of the teaching should be in English, but the use of L1 should not be excluded, especially in the lower level classrooms.
