Few years ago, I have taught English to Korean students, mostly beginner learners. I remembered when I was teaching for the first time, I didn’t plan my lessons very well. The first few weeks of my classes were terrible and frustrating, as well as for my students. I was using books but there wasn’t organized plan on how to achieve the objectives of the lessons or how long each activity should be done. It was chaotic. The students were out of interest or unmotivated to continue studying. This lesson definitely made me reflect on what went wrong in my classes, and think about what would make me a better, organized teacher.
In this lesson, I have learned the importance of making a Lesson plan, the elements of what makes an effective lesson, and what things to consider in writing a structured lesson plan. I have understood that planning a lesson helps the teacher to plan effectively and think logically through the stages in relation to available time. It aids on planning objectives for the students, what activities are mostly effective, what materials or aids are needed, and how long should activities be carried out. It is a working document that keeps the teacher on target and gives the teacher something to refer to during the lesson. It is a record to see what has been done in the class and which materials have been used. Thus, it can be reused in the future.
I have learned that flexibility is important in planning the sequence of the lessons. Depending on the performance or the needs of the students, sometimes we may need to modify our aims or make changes on the activities. It is important to build goals for the students, and for the teacher. I have understood that variety and balance in the lessons should also be considered. It is important to make sure all skills are included and given equal treatment through a good variety of activities. Revision is also important. It needs to be continually reviewed over a sequence of lessons to ensure students retain this information.
Reflecting on what I have learned from my previous lessons, such as what needs to consider with the learners, learning styles, methodologies and approaches in teaching, classroom management, and so on, these items should all be considered, to be able to make a coherent and effective Lesson Planning. I have learned the things that should be included in a lesson plan, such as students` learning objectives, teacher`s personal aims, the language point, teaching aids, anticipated problems and solutions to it, procedure, timing of activities, class level and so on. I am thankful for all the things that I have learned in this course. I was able to gain knowledge on what and how teaching should be. I have realized how important it is to make lesson plans and be organized in everything. This gives me more confidence to teach. It gives me more motivation to to learn more about teaching, and improve myself.
