This unit covered techniques with productive skills - namely speaking and writing. Reasons for communication were listed, with an emphasis on the need for the teacher to create this need and desire while teaching students productive skills. An early distinction was made between fluency and accuracy, and it was specified when one or the other would be the most important. Different kinds of speaking activities, each with varying degrees of teacher control, were listed with examples for each. The same was then done for free speaking activities.
