In this unit, we studied some theories of learning and development, such as maturation theory, environmental theory, constructivism, and others (for example, Piaget's Theory which consists of 4 stages sensorimotor (ages 0-2), preoperational (ages 3-7), concrete operational (ages 7-11) and formal operations (ages 11+). We learned how L1 is acquired and how we can accordingly adopt an approach to L2 learning. Our young learner were split into two groups: ages 5-9 and ages 9-13. and we developed a methodology for each group, based on the standard communicative approach. We will roughly follow the ESA (engage, study, activate) methology in different forms such as straight arrow lessons, boomerang lessons, and patchwork lessons. We also looked at seating arrangements in the classroom and the teacher's various roles in the classroom (counsellor, facilitator, instructor, policeman, psychologist and mentor). Finally, we studied the two productive skills of speaking and writing, and the two receptive skills of listening and reading as regards our two age groups.We will use these framworks as the basis to develop a course curriculum for each group.
