This unit discusses the productive language skills of speaking and writing. The differences between accuracy and fluency are discussed. Accuracy is using correct language. Fluency is allows students to experiment and be creative with language, where communicating meaning is most important. Accuracy would be emphasized in the Study phase whereas fluency would be emphasized in the Activate phase of an ESA lesson. When teaching writing it is important to cover handwriting, spelling, and punctuation. I thought it was good that the unit pointed out how teachers can overlook writing lessons as it tends to be quiet work in a classroom which may not be perceived as a productive way to use time. However, that is not the case, and writing should absolutely be part of lessons.
