This unit focuses on receptive language skills: listening and reading. I have never thought to divide language into receptive and productive skills. The receptive skills can be used for a purpose or goal or for entertainment. Receptive language allows on to predict, deduce, skim, scan, and study in detail. The unit emphasizes the importance of choosing topics to suit all students interests and level.This also highlights the importance of getting to know your students so you can select interesting topics for them. I also learned that it is smart to preteach difficult vocabulary so the selections are not too difficult.
