This unit explains how to use the ESA method to teach vocabulary, grammar, and language functions. It also reviews the straight arrow, boomerang, and patchwork lesson plans using ESA method. Vocabulary to teach should be selected by appropriacy to students and task, how frequently students might encounter the word, and how easy it is to teach to the given level of students. Teachers should explain meaning, use, grammar, spelling, and pronunciation of new vocabulary words. Grammar lessons should include use, meaning, forms and pattern, and spoken versus written forms. Lastly, teachers should teach the function of language such as inviting, commanding, requesting, as well as the formal versus informal.
