There are four past tenses in English: past simple, past continuous, past perfect, past perfect continuous. The past simple is used to express actions that began and ended in the past. The past continuous is used for actions ongoing in the past. Past perfect expresses actions that both started and ended in the past before another past action. Lastly, past perfect continuous express ongoing actions in the past occurring before another past action. I struggled to understand the differences between past continuous and past perfect continuous. I know now that the past continuous is an action ongoing at a time in the past, while the past perfect continuous is an action ongoing in the past until another past action occurs. The former shows an action at a past point in time, while the latter usually expresses a duration of an action.
