Unit 19: Teaching Special Groups outlined the different groups that may need more specialized teaching. It began with beginners and the different categories of beginners, including those that use an alphabet system different from English, and therefore may need more attention given to reading and writing. It described the methodologies that are useful for teaching beginners, and possible problems that may be encountered.
Another specialized group was the individual learners, one group that isn’t much included in the lesson plans that are outlined. It provided a lot of activities that can be used with individuals.
The next group was children. Although children may fall into the beginners’ category, they themselves have specific needs. This area reiterated children’s short attention span and need for change of activities. It provided a list of do’s and don’ts to consider.
The largest section of this unit was on business English. This group often has a more specific reason for learning English, which need to be considered. This section provided a lot of useful information and tips when teaching this group. It explained how teaching this group is more temporary and the employer has more influence over what is taught. It also emphasized that the teacher doesn’t need to have any knowledge of the business, but needs to know what area of business the student is in to better tailor their teaching.
The last section of this unit compared and contrasted monolingual versus multilingual classrooms. It provided some pros and cons of teaching each group, and provided tips for teaching each.
