Unit 10: Video Lessons provided two lessons, and asked them to be compared. The first lesson was a ‘what not to do’ lesson which was very awkward to watch. The teacher was disorganized and confusing, and even I, as an English speaking, couldn’t understand what he was trying to elicit from the students. Additionally, he failed to learn everyone’s name, so he called on the same students consistently, leaving the others out of the engage stage. His need to rush them through everything, and not give clear instructions made for an ineffective lesson.
The second lesson was a stark contrast. The teacher arrived on time, introduced himself and asked for the students’ names, immediately creating a welcoming environment. He used clear and concise examples, catering to the level of the students. Because he had learned everyone’s names, he was able to include everyone into the discussions, making for a more engaged atmosphere.
This unit demonstrated how crucial class management and techniques are to lesson planning.
