This unit focused on the teaching of productive skills: speaking and writing. Much like receptive skills, productive skills also require that the teacher keeps in mind various techniques that will aid in the student understanding of the lesson. The teacher must always commence his/her planning by choosing topics to interest in order to keep the class interesting and engaging. However, when teaching speaking skills verses writing skills, the focus of the lesson will somewhat differ. For example, when teaching a communication-focused course, this lesson will not be geared to complete accuracy, at least not during the activate phase of the lesson as fluency activities will allow students to make use of the language without much, if any, teacher interference. Accuracy will usually be taught during the study stage of the lesson, in which case the teacher will assign accuracy-based activities. These are activities in which correct language usage is taught. On the other hand, when teaching writing skills, accuracy does become more important and apparent. The main factors that must be kept in mind and kept accurately are handwriting, spelling, punctuation. When speaking a new language, many times speakers and "get away" with making certain grammatical mistakes, this is not so for writing. It is impossible to disguise mistakes once they have been written. No matter which of the two productive skills the teacher is teaching, in both cases, it is always important to keep the students interested in the subject matter and having a well-planned lesson with adequate activities that will elicit understanding of the topic and student participation as both speaking and writing are equally important as well an essential part of the language acquisition process.
