When a teacher is constructing an ESA lesson plan, there are four basic skills that are essential to the students' ability to learn a new language. When a lesson is being prepared, the teacher must make sure that all four skills are integrated into the lesson. These skills are receptive skills (reading and listening) and productive skills (speaking and writing). This particular unit focused on receptive skills; how well a student is able to understand what he/she is reading and what they are listening to. In order to build the students' reading and listening abilities, there are a number of receptive skills that will aid their understanding of both. These are predictive skills, scanning, skimming, detailed information, and deduction from context. But how can these predictive skills be incorporated into an ESA lesson plan? According to this unit, there are various approaches that can be incorporated into each stage of the lesson. When teaching reading and listening comprehension, it is important that the teacher incorporates the following: pre-teach the most difficult vocabulary, choose your texts or audio selections that exposes them to both authentic and non-authentic texts, choose topics that will motivate the students, create interest by giving them engaging tasks, and make sure that the tasks chosen aren't either too difficult or too easy. The lesson must be challenging but not impossible to learn. If all these teaching skills are taken into consideration during lesson planning the student will learn and their confidence will increase as a result.
