The principal value of the unit on Teaching Special Groups was to review and understand the various issues that are likely to arise from teaching various groups; from beginners to business (English Special Purpose) students. Various groups have their own motivations for learning English. Some need English for work related reasons; others as necessary skills for entry to English language academic institutions. Ages within groups also can vary considerably. Here a homogenous group with similar ages may be easier to deal with and have similar motivations and difficulties. Younger students may find learning and absorbing a new language (English) relatively easy, while older students may be more fixed in their approach and experience greater problems. The unit was valuable in highlighting the various groups and identifying problems and possible solutions that could be used by the teacher.
