The Modals, Phrasal Verbs and Passive Voice unit is one of the most interesting units in that the use of these elements significantly adds to the range of meanings that verbs can have and thus extends the communication of ideas. Modals in particular introduce subtleties such as degrees of certainty/uncertainty (may, might, must) and ability (can, able to, could) which provides a fuller and richer understanding of speech. Similarly, relative clauses combined with appropriate pronouns (who, whose, whom, etc.) and necessary punctuation (commas) can change meaning by redirecting emphasis to a clause which is essential to the full meaning or superficial and merely informative. This unit contains considerable material and rules which need to be studied and absorbed in order to properly pass on these valuable structures to students.
