The Conditionals and Reported Speech unit is one of the most difficult to master and needs numerous revisions to establish an understanding of the various rules and options. Conditionals provide a large number of subtle variations resulting in different meanings and conditional types (zero, first second etc.), which can be difficult to communicate to students. This will require very careful approach and more time to ensure consistency and accuracy. A similar apparent complexity exists with reported speech, although in this case the general rule of moving tenses backwards (back shifting and adjusting pronouns and time descriptions) provides a basic framework for reported speech. Exceptions can be studied later.
