Apart from emphasising the importance of both the receptive (reading / listening) and productive (speaking / writing) skills in the teaching process, this module analysed and clearly focussed on the need for students to acquire 'receptive' skills. The unit demonstrated not merely the need for technical proficiency in listening and reading but showed the need for mental skills so that material would be understood and absorbed in addition to simply acquired. This, coupled with a variety of reasons for receptive skills, from predictive knowledge acquisition by interpreting headlines and summaries to knowledge captured as part of a detailed learning process made the importance of receptive skills clear as an essential component of the overall teaching process.
